Introducing Mikee: The Environmental Enthusiast and Salon Owner
Meet Mikee, an environmental enthusiast and eco-friendly salon owner with 13.5 years of experience in the industry. The two “E”s in his name stand for the environment and everyone, the two things he cares about the most. Mikee has a 10-year career as a salon owner, during which he has leased historical places to recycle their usefulness and save them from destruction or the waste of building a new location. His salon, Metro Hair Salon and Spa, is a testament to his commitment to the environment and his innovative approach to salon ownership.
He has implemented systems from top to bottom to ensure he is providing the most efficient and effective services while still utilizing the hottest trends and becoming as sustainable as possible. As a blonding specialist, Mikee is on a mission to grow a team of like-minded individuals who will work hard and hand in hand with the local and global ecosystems.
Mikee’s journey to sustainability began when he learned about the use of genetically modified foods in our modern food system and how they can affect our ability to live and thrive as humans. This led him to research what goes into the products and items we put in and on our bodies. Before he opened a salon, he had been learning and implementing what he learned to make his salon safer and more sustainable.
Mikee suggests a few practical steps we can use today, such as turning the water off when we’re not using it, switching to LED lights in our salons and homes, and learning from our local government what the recycling statutes are.
The biggest challenge, according to Mikee, is to let people have time to think about why it’s important to be eco-friendly and sustainable. He tries to educate clients, friends, family, and followers one by one, but until they are ready to accept the information into their hearts and minds, we as eco-warriors must be patient and show resilience in our efforts. As he says, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
The response to Mikee’s eco efforts has been overwhelmingly positive. Many people seek out services at his salon due solely to their safety and sustainability. He envisions a future where all products will be safe, sourced ethically, manufactured using technology that gives back to the earth, and transported using no carbon methods. Stylists will have systems to manage waste effectively, and it will be easier than the ways we are currently doing things. In his words, what we need is “recycling that actually works.”
